Harbor Seal pups are usually born in March or April and they weigh about twenty pounds at birth. Usually they are born on the beach, but sometimes birth happens in the water. The pups are usually in the water with mom shortly after birth and it is a huge amount of fun watching them getting used to the world. There is a lot of obvious affection shown by both the pups and their mothers on land and in the water. Smell is the most important indicator as to who belongs to who so you will see a lot of really cute nose to nose stuff.

Harbor Seal Pups suckle for about six weeks and grow fast, reaching a weight of about 50 pounds when they are weaned. At that point they are in the water as much as the adults and are well on their way to learning how to fish on their own. As they head off into deeper waters they have to learn fast about Shark and Whale. White Tip, Great White, Stellar Sea Lion, and Orca are among the predators that hunt Harbor Seal.

This is VERY important!
If you find a seal pup that appears to be abandoned
please DO NOT touch it. If you do, you risk breaking the
bond between the pup and it's mother. Mom is probably just out fishing.
