Richard Whitaker

Richard Whitaker left Berkeley and the University of California in 1965 to become Director of Education for the American Institute of Architects and Executive director of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. Between 1967 and 1971 he was the Director of Design at the University of Colorado in Boulder.

In 1971 he moved to Milwaukee where he was one of the initial faculty at the University of Wisconsin. The following year he became Head of the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois, Chicago, where he initiated the graduate program and the Italian study program in Rome and Milan.

In 1980, he became Dean of of the UIC College of Architecture, Art, and Urban Planning and completed his term in 1991. While in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Illinois, Whitaker developed public architecture schools in the United States, Italy, England and China. His architectural practices in Colorado and Chicago earned several AIA design awards.

He has served as a member of the Mayor's Architectural Advisory Committee in Chicago and as Architectural Education Planning Advisor in Louisiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, and the People's Republic of China. Ha has participated in a number of national architectural design awards and competition juries. Whitaker, after a sabbatical in Italy, resumed teaching in Chicago in 1992, along with his architectural practice.
