The Sea Ranch coastline is a succession of juts and jags out into the Pacific Ocean. The Burke home is located on one of those juts between a couple of the jags. It is at the end of a cul-de-sac on a large and very private lot. The bluff trail is nearby, but not in front of the home. For all intents and purposes you are alone on your own patch of the California coast with direct access to blue and white water views of the Pacific. The architect, Carson Bowler, tucked his masterpiece into a line of cypress trees, but positioned it so as to have a series of magnificent views through the trees from all of the principal rooms in the home. There is a plain Jane garden bench situated in an absolutely splendid spot for one or two people to watch waves, birds, whales, seals, and if the fancy strikes, clouds. It is, of course, also suitable for sunsets. And then we go inside the home. The living room has as it’s focus a huge wood-burning fireplace, but, in addition, large windows look out into the garden and past it to the ocean beyond. There are plenty of places to curl up with a good book or take a quick cat nap during the day and in the evening, after the sunset and dinner, it is great place to enjoy a fire or a movie on the large television. The very well appointed kitchen is up a few steps from the living room, but looks out into it so that the chef can remain in touch with what the rest of the group is doing. The dining room is next to the kitchen and has magnificent ocean views which the kitchen shares. A glassed in sun porch with more magnificent ocean views is frequently mentioned by guests as being their favorite place in the entire home – particularly on a damp day. There are two beautiful bedroom suites in the home – one downstairs and one on the upper level. Downstairs, the master bedroom suite with a queen bed and upstairs the guest suite with a queen bed. The upstairs suite also has a separate sitting room that is open to the downstairs. The downstairs master bedroom suite opens to a small outdoor deck which turns out to be the perfect spot for that first cup of coffee in the morning. There is central heating, and laundry facilities, as well as a garage. The home will accommodate four persons and children above the age of eight are welcome. Starting at $753 two nights; $2,027 seven nights.
This location is so beautiful that it is tempting to just stay in your home away from home, but don’t do it. There is a lot to see in Sea Ranch and the nearby trail system gives you access to it all. Ohlson Ranch Center is just a few minutes down the trail. It offers swimming in season, tennis year around, a sand lot volley ball court, and a half court basketball facility, as well as beach access.
